Coaching: It’s a bit like getting the builders in

Coaching is all about change. And change is great: invigorating and exciting, opening doors and pushing boundaries. And, as I was reminded this week when I had the builders in, it can also be loud, very messy and really uncomfortable.

A couple of days ago phase one was completed: plaster removed from walls, walls injected with something mysterious to prevent damp, walls re-plastered. Phase two involves me keeping the doors and windows open for six weeks so the new plaster can dry out. Some irony there (also this is England in April, so obviously it’s raining).

Last week was weird. I no longer felt at home in my home and even when everything had been tidied up and the excellent builders left, it was worse than before it all started - all the furniture piled up, nothing against the walls. Me camping in one room.

But it’s done. Yes, it will take 6 more weeks and then it all has to be painted, but that’s ok. Something inside me has relaxed. I did what needed to be done, and the rest is just one foot in front of the other.

Coaching is all about change, which is why the right time for you to get coaching is when you’re ready for change. It’s seldom a quick fix, it’s often a bit messy and it may take quite a long time, but it feels good to get started. Most importantly, you won’t be alone.
